The Cost of Lasik - What to Expect, What's Included and Financing Options

One large clinic that performs LASIK procedures has a very creative advertising approach. On their Web site, they advise people never to look for bargains when they are shopping for parachutes, scuba gear or laser eye surgery. They also wisely counsel interested parties to compare apples to apples when pricing LASIK surgery.

The cost of vision correction, however it is approached, depends on a number of factors. The specific procedure that’s best for you, the location and overhead of the clinic or outpatient surgery center, the physician’s experience, the length of the recovery period and the cost of post-operative pain relief—these are all variables in the complicated price formula. For example, more experienced surgeons may charge higher fees, while some might simply have bigger rent payments in their part of town. As with any other purchase, do your homework and get the facts.

The total cost, of course, will also depend on the particular “vision correction package” that you are purchasing. Many doctors include both pre- and post-operative care in the deal, and offer warranties lasting from 90days to the patient’s lifetime. The great diversity of approaches means, as the clever advertiser said, that you need to compare apples to apples. A “low” price that does not cover follow-up visits, pain medication or other necessities will not, in the long run, be a better bargain than a “higher” price that does include all of these things. Be as careful and exacting in this part of your research as you were when looking into the medical aspects of the LASIK surgery.

On average, the cost for LASIK eye surgery in the U.S. is between $1,500 and$2,000 per eye. By shopping around, you will find any number of doctors and clinics that charge less, as well as those that charge more. And although it’s understandable that you want find the best price, remember that you also have to think about reputation, quality, aftercare and service. Of course, once you decide on the clinic and the LASIK surgeon, you will face another set of decisions that you must make before undergoing the treatment.

If you do not wish to pay for the procedure in cash, there are various financing methods you can employ. If you do decide to finance your LASIK eye surgery, you will then have another investigation to pursue—finding the best deal for financing. Most doctors and clinics will offer some kind of financing plan, whether or not they are the lender, and you will have to decide if their interest rate and monthly payment are the best deal for you.

Naturally, you can finance the LASIK surgery cost yourself by using a credit card, a portion of your homeowner’s line of credit or taking out a loan through a bank, finance company or paycheck advance lender. A simple comparison of interest rates and “total loan cost” will yield a winner in short order.

Lasik eye surgery is very safe nowadays. My cousin got her dental implants and lasik surgery in India by a company called Indian Health Guru Consultants. The Price for dental and lasik surgery is very less in India. She paid 25% of the price she was quoted in America.

Indian Health Guru Consultants is very famous in India They arrange Dental surgery, jaw surgery, lasik eye surgery, Dental Implants etc for foreign patients in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines- about their patient stories. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as dental and eye surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

$4000 is about right for most places. Best thing to do is to call some of your local Ophthalmology clinics, these are practices that have MD's, and may provide surgery options. Many places do free lasik consultations, and will let you know if you are even a candidate. Also, if you wear contacts, they usually want you to wear glasses for several weeks before the surgery with no contact lens wear in order to properly reshape the cornea.

Hi, my name is Dr. Jay Lustbader, and I am an ophthalmologist with LasikPlus.
You will find that the cost of Lasik or PRK will vary from provider to provider. When comparing prices, there are several important factors to keep in mind. One is what technology you are getting for the price. Some surgeons offer all-laser Lasik, while others are still using a blade. Some surgeons offer custom wavefront treatments, others do not. You want to be sure you are getting the most up-to-date technology for the price you pay. A second consideration is whether the price includes coverage for enhancements, if an additional touch-up is needed in the future. Finally, in addition to price, you should consider the experience of the surgeon and the quality of the staff when deciding where to have the procedure done.
The best way to investigate these issues and to find out if Lasik is right for you is to have a thorough exam and consultation with a doctor. At LasikPlus, we provide a free comprehensive Lasik exam and consultation using the latest technology. For additional information or to set up a free consultative exam with your local LasikPlus doctor, you may call 1-866-953-0282 or visit us on the web at http://tinyurl.com/Dr-Lustbader. You can deduct it if it is to correct "defective vision". LASIK is mentioned by name at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/rr-03-57.pdf as being for the correction of bodily disfunction and therefore a legitimate medical expense that may be deducted. For tax purposes, "cosmetic" surgery is surgery that is to make you look better to others (facelifts, breast implants, etc.), not surgery to help you see normally.

    a. "You can include in medical expenses the amount you pay for eye surgery to treat defective vision, such as laser eye surgery or radial keratotomy. "
    b. "…laser eye surgery is allowed under § 213(d)(9) because the surgery is a procedure that meaningfully promotes the proper function of the body. Vision correction with eyeglasses or contact lenses qualifies as medical care. See Rev. Rul. 74-429, 1974-2 C.B. 83. Eye surgery to correct defective vision, including laser procedures such as LASIK and radial keratotomy, corrects a dysfunction of the body. Accordingly, the cost of the laser eye surgery is an expense for medical care within the meaning of § 213(d) that B may deduct under § 213 (subject to the limitations of that section)."
    c. You can deduct "Surgery to improve defective vision, such as laser eye surgery".
    d. "The cost of items such as false teeth, prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses, laser eye surgery, hearing aids, crutches, wheelchairs, and guide dogs for the blind or deaf are deductible medical expenses."

Go to your doctor for a lasik consulatation. Different proceedures have different prices as do the surgeons depending on their education and experience. Your RX really does not have as much bearing as your corneal thickness and tear production as well as how old you are and how much your eyes have changed over the years. You need to call and ask.

Lasik is actually on the way out. Lens replacement technology is safer, cheaper, and doesn't suffer from the multitude of side effects Lasik has become associated with. With that in mind, I think you'll see Lasik prices start to fall as the institutes with investments in the hardware struggle to stay in business despite their inferior product.

I got laser vision surgery last winter and have not had any problems. It took me ages to get up the nerves to get the surgery performed, now I am glad I did. I spent several visits at the clinic inquiring about how the procedures work (Lasik vs PRK) and how it would affect me. My Delaware eye doctor was very comforting. Try visiting your local Arizona laser vision clinic and make an appointment for a free consultation. http://www.locallaservisioncenters.com/Arizona-Laser-Vision-Correction.html
